Sealing It In: Five Plant-Derived Occlusives That Lock Moisture Where You Want It
Meet the bouncers. If a humectant draws water in and an emollient softens the surface, an occlusive is the seal: a hydrophobic layer that sits on top and slows the escape of everything beneath it. It's the third member of a team, and arguably the one that makes the other two worth using — because there's little point drawing water into the skin if it simply evaporates ten minutes later.

Here are five plant-derived occlusives worth knowing, and how to use them well.
How occlusion actually works. Skin constantly loses water to the air — a process called trans epidermal water loss (TEWL). An occlusive forms a hydrophobic film that slows that loss, keeping the stratum corneum hydrated for longer. The catch, which we'll be honest about below: the gold-standard occlusive is petrolatum (a petroleum derivative that reduces TEWL by ~99% under occlusion conditions), and plant-derived occlusives are partial by comparison. That's a trade-off worth understanding, not hiding.
💧 Pro tip: apply to slightly damp skin. The occlusive's job is to seal in water that's already there — so apply your moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp after cleansing. You're locking in real water, not relying entirely on the humectant to attract it from the air. It's a small habit that makes a meaningful difference to how even modest natural occlusives perform.
1. Cocoa Butter
INCI: Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter
Type: Occlusive + emollient (plant butter) · Melting point: ~32–36 °C depending on grade · Typical use: 2–10% in emulsions (up to 100% in balms) · ✅ COSMOS-approved · ✅ Vegan
The rich, chocolate-scented classic. Cocoa butter melts at or just above skin temperature, forming a cushioning, protective layer as it does. It's harder and more occlusive than shea, making it a favourite for lip balms, body bars, and rich winter creams where a genuine barrier feel is wanted.
- Loves: balms, body butters, lip products, protective winter creams.
- Watch: prone to fat bloom and graininess (like shea) if not tempered — melt fully and cool quickly for a smooth set. The natural chocolate aroma is lovely but can clash with delicate fragrances; deodorised grades are available. Can feel heavy on the face, and cocoa butter is frequently cited as comedogenic on facial skin — the evidence base for comedogenicity rating scales is debated, but those with acne-prone skin may wish to patch test or reserve cocoa butter for body and lip use.
2. Beeswax
INCI: Cera Alba
Type: Occlusive + structurant (wax) · Melting point: ~62–65 °C · Typical use: 1–10% (higher in balms and sticks) · ✅ COSMOS-approved · ❌ Not vegan
The workhorse natural wax. Beeswax does double duty — it's occlusive and a structuring agent, giving body to balms, hardness to sticks, and a breathable, water-repellent film without feeling plasticky. It can also lend some structure to W/O (water-in-oil) emulsions and is the basis of traditional beeswax-borax creams, though it is not a general-purpose emulsifier for O/W systems and can contribute to instability if used carelessly in those.
- Loves: lip balms, salves, solid balms, body butters, W/O creams, traditional beeswax-borax formulations.
- Watch: not vegan — a dealbreaker for many natural brands (see candelilla and carnauba below for plant-based alternatives). Sourcing and quality vary considerably; look for filtered, cosmetic-grade, ethically sourced beeswax from traceable apiaries. Can drag if overused.
3. Candelilla Wax
INCI: Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax
Type: Occlusive + structurant (vegan wax) · Melting point: ~68–75 °C (varies by grade) · Typical use: 1–10% · ✅ COSMOS-approved · ✅ Vegan
The go-to vegan alternative to beeswax, harvested from the candelilla shrub native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. It's harder than beeswax, so you typically use less of it to achieve the same structure — a common rookie error is swapping beeswax for candelilla 1:1 and ending up with a brick. Gives a glossy finish, prized in lip products.
- Loves: vegan lip balms and sticks, mascaras, glossy balms, structuring anhydrous products.
- Watch: not a 1:1 swap for beeswax — a widely used rule of thumb is to start at roughly 60–70% of the beeswax quantity and adjust from there. Treat this as a starting point only: the right level depends on your full formula, including the oils and butters present, and bench trialling is essential. Higher melt point than beeswax means a hotter process; check your other ingredients can tolerate this. Melt point can vary between grades and suppliers — always check the spec sheet.
4. Carnauba Wax
INCI: Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax
Type: Occlusive + hardener (vegan wax) · Melting point: ~82–86 °C · Typical use: 0.5–5% · ✅ COSMOS-approved · ✅ Vegan
The hardest natural wax there is, derived from the leaves of the carnauba palm native to Brazil's semi-arid northeast. You use it in small amounts for hardness and a high-gloss, high-melt-point structure — think a lipstick that survives a warm handbag. It functions more as a structuring occlusive than a skin-feel one.
Carnauba has a quietly positive sustainability story: harvesting is traditionally a hand-gathered, smallholder craft in Brazil's Ceará and Piauí states, and the wax is taken from the leaves without felling the tree. It is a palm-family plant, which is worth noting. To be clear: carnauba (Copernicia cerifera) is botanically distinct from oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and is not a source of palm oil or palm kernel oil — it doesn't carry the same deforestation concerns. However, if your brand takes a strict "no palm-family plants" position in its messaging, it's worth being transparent with your audience.
- Loves: raising the melt point of sticks and balms, high-gloss finishes, heat-stable anhydrous products; typically blended with softer waxes rather than used alone.
- Watch: very hard and high-melting — a little goes a long way, and too much makes a product brittle and draggy. Requires high processing temperatures; ensure your full formula and any heat-sensitive actives can tolerate ~85 °C.
5. Plant Waxes: Sunflower & Rice Bran
INCI: Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Wax · Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Wax
Type: Occlusive + structurant (vegan waxes) · Melting point: ~74–80 °C · Typical use: 1–10% · ✅ COSMOS-approved · ✅ Vegan
A newer generation of vegan, crop-by-product waxes that sit between candelilla and carnauba in hardness. Sunflower wax in particular has become popular as a clean, mild-odour structurant and genuine occlusive film-former, with a good sustainability story — it's a by-product of sunflower oil winterisation, making good use of material that would otherwise be a processing waste stream. Rice bran wax, similarly, is derived from the refining of rice bran oil.
- Loves: vegan balms and sticks, natural deodorants, oil gelling, "clean" formulations where a neutral odour matters.
- Watch: grades and melt points vary meaningfully between suppliers — always check the specification sheet before formulating. As structurants, sunflower and rice bran wax are not interchangeable gram-for-gram with one another or with other waxes; expect to trial. Processing temperatures are higher than for beeswax.

- Shea Butter (INCI: Vitellaria Paradoxa Seed Butter) — covered in our emollient guide, but it earns a mention here too: it's genuinely dual-role, emollient and mildly occlusive, making it one of the most versatile plant butters in a natural formulator's toolkit.
- Kokum & Mango Butter (INCI: Garcinia Indica Seed Butter · Mangifera Indica Seed Butter) — harder, more stable butters that resist the graininess and fat bloom that can trouble shea; useful occlusive-emollients for balms where a smoother, more stable texture is wanted.
- Jojoba (INCI: Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil) — technically a liquid wax ester rather than a conventional oil, which is why it earns a place here as well as in emollient discussions. It's COSMOS-approved, vegan, and oxidatively very stable, with mild occlusive properties alongside its emollient ones. A good choice when you want a lighter occlusive touch — particularly in facial formulations.
- Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (e.g. INCI: Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Hydrogenated Castor Oil) — plant oils processed to be firmer, more occlusive, and more oxidatively stable than their liquid counterparts; versatile natural structurants. Worth noting that COSMOS status varies across this category — some hydrogenated vegetable oils are approved, others are restricted depending on the starting material and processing route. Always verify with your supplier and the current COSMOS standard documentation before assuming approval.
- The honest benchmark — petrolatum, mineral oil, dimethicone — the most effective occlusives by a wide margin, but petroleum- or silicone-derived, not COSMOS-approved, and outside a natural brief. Worth knowing exactly what you're choosing not to use, and why your natural formula will behave differently at the skin barrier level.
A Few Honest Formulating Truths
Natural occlusives are partial occlusives
This is the honest headline. Petrolatum reduces trans epidermal water loss by approximately 99% under occlusion conditions; plant butters and waxes are meaningfully lower. That doesn't make them useless — far from it — but it does mean a natural moisturiser relies more on a well-built system (humectants + emollients + occlusives working together) than on brute-force sealing. Set your own and your customers' expectations accordingly, and don't over-claim "locks in moisture all day."
Pro tip: apply your moisturiser to skin that's still slightly damp after cleansing — you're sealing in water that's already present at the surface, rather than relying entirely on your humectant to attract it from scratch. This small habit makes a genuine, noticeable difference to how even a modest natural moisturiser performs.
Waxes do two jobs at once — mind the structure
Most natural occlusives are also structurants: they harden balms, thicken sticks, and raise melting points. That's a feature, but it means changing your occlusive changes your texture, not just your barrier function. Swapping beeswax for a harder wax like candelilla or carnauba without reducing the quantity is the classic way to turn a soft balm into a hockey puck. Reformulate by structure and texture target, not by like-for-like weight substitution.
Respect the melting points during processing
Natural waxes span a wide melt range — cocoa butter melts at or just above skin temperature, carnauba needs around 85 °C to fully liquefy. In a blend, always heat to the highest-melting component so that everything is fully liquid and homogeneous before mixing begins, otherwise you'll get lumps, an uneven set, and inconsistent texture batch to batch. For butters prone to graininess — cocoa butter and shea in particular — melt fully and cool quickly to encourage a smooth, stable crystal structure.
Occlusion is a skin-feel dial, not just a function
Too little and the barrier benefit is lost; too much and the product feels heavy, greasy, and draggy on the skin — and may feel unwelcome on acne-prone or congested complexions. Facial products usually want a light occlusive touch — a butter with a naturally rich fatty acid profile, or a whisper of wax; rich body balms and lip products can take considerably more. Match the occlusive load to where the product is going to be used, and to your target consumer's skin type.
A note on comedogenicity — particularly for cocoa butter
Cocoa butter appears on various comedogenic rating scales, and it's a question that comes up regularly from consumers with acne-prone or oily skin. The honest answer is that the evidence base for these rating scales is debated — much of the original research was conducted on rabbit ears rather than human facial skin, and real-world responses vary significantly between individuals. That said, cocoa butter is a rich, occlusive ingredient, and those with congestion-prone skin may find it better suited to body and lip use than facial formulations. A patch-test recommendation in your product copy is a simple, responsible addition.
They don't add water — complete the trio
Like emollients, occlusives contribute no water of their own; they only slow its escape. The complete natural moisturiser is built on the trio: a humectant to attract and bind water, an emollient to soften and smooth the surface, and an occlusive to seal it all in. Get the balance right for your product format and target skin type, and even modest natural occlusives perform beautifully.
